Kindergarten through 4th Grade

Carlson Elementary now follows a 5-day rotation for specials classes. Each student will have PE, Music, Library, or Technology on a Tuesday - Friday schedule.

On Mondays, students will rotate by quarter to enjoy an additional day of one of these classes. This extra time provides unique learning opportunities that go beyond typical classroom experiences.

Your child’s homeroom teacher will share their specific schedule so you can plan accordingly (for example, making sure they wear tennis shoes on PE days).

5th & 6th Grade

Students in grades 5 and 6 are provided PE, Music, Library (library and computer lab) as well as Band and Orchestra. These classes follow a 3 day rotation where day 1 is repeated as day 4 on the district 6 day rotation schedule and so on. If your child is in fifth or sixth grade and interested in playing a band or orchestra instrument, they will be given the opportunity to participate the first week of school to determine their interest. From there they will be placed accordingly. Students who play an instrument do not attend Music class but rather will attend their respective instrument classes. Band and Orchestra classes occur within the instructional day. We refer to this as BLOCK Time and it falls between 12:00pm and 1:05pm depending upon which grade level your child is in. Homeroom teachers will provide you with a class schedule so you can plan accordingly.

Lunch Schedule

Lunch Schedule 25-26
Carlson Elementary provides hot lunch meals to all students in grades K-6.

Carlson Elementary students eat lunch first and then are dismissed to the playground for recess time.  Lunch time averages about 20 minutes, student recess averages about 20 minutes.  Below is the lunch schedule for the current school year at Carlson.

Students may bring their own lunch as well. Homeroom classes will be seated together during their time in the cafeteria. Students are asked to clean up after themselves by throwing their lunches away and will be dismissed to recess only when their tables are clean and they are quietly seated ready to go. Students with food allergies will be provided an alternative table to sit at with a friend of their choice. This seating will be provided based on parent feedback and severity of the allergy.

Parents who wish to have lunch with their child may do so, we only ask that you limit the time to their respective lunch times and select 1 day during the week to share this privilege with your child. You will be provided the opportunity to sit with your child's class (based on room available) or you may sit at alternative guest seating with your child. All parents must sign in at the front office before coming into the campus.

Early Release Days

Chandler Schools provides two separate opportunities for parents to formally meet with teachers for parent/teacher conferences. These days are considered Early Release days because your child, in grades K-6, will be dismissed from school at 11:30am.

The four scheduled Early Release days are below:
  • Wednesday, August 23rd & Thursday, August 24th (Fall Conferences)
  • Wednesday, February 28th & Thursday, February 29th (Spring Conferences)

Bus transportation will be provided to those students who are eligible to ride the bus home. We ask that parents make arrangements for their children to be picked up on time during these days. Make sure you notify day care providers if necessary.

High Heat Days (Excessive Heat)

Due to the excessive heat that comes with the start of school in Chandler, the district has established a heat indicator rating scale that determines when indoor activity only is required. It is a combination of humidity and temperature and is monitored by the district and communicated out to the schools throughout the instructional day.

Once identified as a heat day (indoor activity only), classrooms will be expected to remain inside for any activity (recess, lunch recess, etc). Homeroom teachers have established heat day procedures for their classrooms providing opportunity for some free time in the classroom to replace what would be outdoor recess. During lunch time, students will be escorted to lunch and rather than dismissed to the outside playground, they will be escorted to an alternative classroom site where they can gather with their friends and play games, watch a short video, etc. Students will be supervised in the classroom by one of our duty teachers during this time until the homeroom teacher comes to pick them up.

Should you have questions or concerns about the district and/or school policy regarding heat day guidelines, please feel free to contact the principal at 480-227-3800.
